The Story of Rotorua Association of Triathletes (RATS)

Founded on October 7, 1992, the Rotorua Association of Triathletes (RATS) has grown into one of New Zealand’s most spirited and active multisport communities. But the journey began long before the club was officially incorporated.

The early days were focused on supporting local multisport athletes, there were no formal training sessions, just community and camaraderie. RATS was one of the first six or seven triathlon clubs in New Zealand.

Did you know?

The first Blue Lake Multisport Festival was held in 1986, six years before RATS was officially formed.

The Blue Lake Spark

This iconic event inspired local athletes to come together and create something more permanent. One of the biggest drivers behind the club’s formation was Garry Turner, a former Poverty Bay rugby rep and Ngongotahā Track Club member. With support from his wife Corrina, Garry organised a meeting at the Lake City Clubrooms that drew 50–60 people.

Milestones and Memorable Moments

As the club grew, the Hewlett family brought a new wave of enthusiasm, serving in leadership and racing roles. Their involvement helped elevate RATS to the next level.

The Early Events

With the Blue Lake Triathlon still under external management, RATS began running its own events. A standout moment was the Hinehopu Triathlon, followed by two business house relays with help from Bruce Trask of Bay Sports Foundation. These relays earned the club over $2,000 each—vital funds for a growing organisation.

Fun Fact

One Christmas, the club ran a duathlon in damp weather. Sue Taft raced with a sheepskin seat cover on her bike—true Kiwi grit!
